Has intelligence reached its peak with humans, or is it just taking off?

In a near future, the genetics of intellect are finally within reach. Research suggests how to harness brain evolution, launching a hunt for a missing link―one that would allow to design humans with skills that prodigies of old could only dream of.

A newborn is torn from its mother and kept hidden for years, to grow up unaware of the pivotal role he will play in the global pursuit for the unique traits he possesses.

Germline engineering and biological enhancement have become routine, and ancient doubts have emerged in new guises: Who are we? Is there a purpose to life? Why is there so much suffering? When faith and science fail to answer these questions, personal greed and national interest quickly fill the void.

But gene selection is expensive, and many are excluded from its benefits. The stage is set for tribalism and social discontent on a scale without precedent, and those caught in the fray, whether by choice or by chance, must play roles not always to their liking in the struggle of all creatures against the arbitrariness of existence. Book review:

Masterfully written, Cognition by Jacques St-Malo is an eloquent and stimulating exposition, bringing alive a genetic engineering debate.  A techno-thriller and science fiction creation, showing what might happen in the not so distant future.

This book covers numerous topics of highbrow deliberation.  If you want a book to challenge you and to make you think, this is it.  Cognition is a story about people.  What makes them tick?  Are their thought processes and choice making skills dependent on DNA or circumstances?

Hidden somewhere in the Celebes Sea, a scientist is breaking the law.  His genetic engineering is bringing couples to the island in search of designer babies.  He’s had a couple of years of success but now his research must be destroyed for somehow he has been discovered.  Throughout the book we follow the lives of several of the test subjects to come out of his Prometheus module.  All of them are interesting, but Ethan is the one that held my interest the most.  If he had been born in another time, he would have been a prince.  Now, he is only the son of a housekeeper.  Yet this seemingly ordinary man will become the target of multiple search parties, for slowly Xin Pei Cao experiments are coming to light.

This story has a leisurely pace, allowing you to absorb the wonders of this new futuristic world.  Beautiful descriptions bring both people and places to life; you can literally soak in the atmosphere.  Simply, this is an innovative showpiece of human evolution.  A world created where to have money for genetics means better prospects.  Not fair, or the way forward for a near-perfect population?

Jacques St-Malo reveals both his philosophy, and his talent for wrapping an engrossing story between his articulate arguments on the human thought process.  Cognition by Jacques St-Malo is a powerfully written book and comes highly recommended by Chick Lit Café.
