Teammates: On Ice by Alison Sommer is an action-packed book created to excite and entertain. It is complete with drama, intrigue and dynamic relationships that really speak to the modern reader. Even if you don’t understand a single thing about hockey, you are going to love this book.
Our protagonist is Patricia Fitzpatrick, who prefers to be called “Fitz”. Like many women she is being suffocated in a drab suburban life with a controlling and distant husband. Hockey is her way of staying sane and feeling connected with herself and her community.
However, her sport is undermined when issues within the team threaten to tear it apart and destroy Fitz’s only source of happiness. The four friends; Michelle, Tessa and Dawn, led by Patricia, begin their own team called The Darts. Faced with failure in their first season, it is up to Fitz to keep her team together and battle ongoing issues at home.
I was struck by the easy, conversational style the author employed to create the narrative. It was so realistic I felt myself being immediately drawn into the lives of the main character and her friends, Michelle, Tessa and Dawn. The characters are well- developed and their relationships are as intriguing as they are believable. I think this is one of the major strengths of this book – the relatability of the people, the issues they face and the story’s narrative.
The LGBTQ and other romantic themes are dealt with sincerity, compassion and sensitivity. The author employs her writing skills to capture the complexities of relationships these four intriguing and realistic women face. These parts of the book are not only enjoyable, but remind us of the importance of love and taking care of each, as well as, the heartaches relationships often entail. Importantly, they add to the richness of the narrative.
I can’t wait for the next book to be released. It will be like catching up with old and much-loved friends. Do yourself a favor and grab a copy today. I know you will enjoy it.
