It continues the charming, absorbing story of Hayden who is plunged into a magical, secret place where she meets more of her family. The captivating story is a mix between romance, fantasy, and mystery. As Hayden becomes more acclimatized with Destiny Falls and its inhabitants, she meets Nakita, a ferry captain. Moments after their meeting, Nakita asks Hayden to meet her later. During their rushed conversation, Hayden catches the word “Gladstone” which she soon discovers is an island that nobody in Destiny Falls wants to talk about. When Nakita is found dead, Hayden is flung into another mystery with only a few clues to guide her as she tries to solve the murder. Elizabeth Pantley’s flawless and immersive story-telling brings to life the scenes and settings in Destiny Falls. Despite its beauty, an eerie feeling surrounds the intriguing town. Hayden has to coerce information from friends and even then, they remain tight-lipped. The story contains many fascinating elements, some continued from the first story including speaking cats, a beautiful home that adjusts itself to the wishes of its residents, and a mirror that is a portal between Hayden’s fantasy world and the real world. In the story, one mystery ties to another with jigsaw perfection, introducing new, exciting elements to Hayden’s background and family, including her missing mother, Emily. The characters remain aloof as they withhold information and Hayden has to work on the mystery alone at the beginning. Without Hayden knowing who to trust in Destiny Falls, the story remains refreshingly unpredictable. As the lead character, she is resolute and brave. She also has a sense of humor explored through her internal dialogue and her conversations with her cat.
