Gritty, real and astonishingly powerful are just a few words that come to mind after completing Fall to Pieces by Becky Flade. It is a commanding novel that lovers of great stories won’t be able to put down. If you like a good romantic suspense novel, you are going to love this book.
Our protagonist is Lexi or Alexandra Danvers. She is a homicide detective living in Philadelphia who is driven by her passion to bring child murderer, Arthur Book, to justice. Her past is complex, and the reader soon learns that there is a lot more to Lexi than just a formidable cop trying to do her job.
Lexi’s husband committed suicide after nearly beating Arthur Book to death. Torn by guilt and shame, Lexi’s behavior borders on the dangerous and perilous. She is a complex character that readers will soon learn to love.
We meet her snuggled up in bed, warm and comfortable. Next thing she’s pulling a gun on a one-night stand that doesn’t want to go home. After that she’s having a nice friendly catch up with a girlfriend over coffee and doughnuts at a shooting range. From that moment on, the reader is under no illusion as to what type of character Lexi is.
Lexi is introduced to a new partner who shares her passion for justice. He is detective Xavier Knight, a police corruption specialist, and his real role is to investigate Lexi to ensure that she is fit to serve in the police force. Together they begin a hazardous investigation to catch this alarming criminal while Lexi is under the constant eye of Xavier.
Readers will love the tension between Lexi and Xavier. Outwardly, they are focused, calm and determined to catch the child killer. Underneath, however, both are a maelstrom of emotions, fears and dark secrets.
Fall to Pieces is well-written and beautifully crafted. The narrative moves from scene to scene effortlessly and the dialogues are seamless. The author was able to create an intensely rich work of fiction that is immensely pleasing in its reality. Her focus on details and her intriguing plot are proof of her writing ability.
This is an amazing book. Whether you are a fan of crime fiction, romance or just a book junky, you are going to find yourself drawn into the story and not be able to put it down.
