Review:

Susie Wheeler is in her sixties. She lives on her peaceful ranch in the beautiful foothills of Colorado. She is a widow but she is spunky, strong and capable. Her son has been helping her take care of the ranch. Susie spends her time taking in abused horses and gentling them. Then she finds good homes for them where they will no longer experience abuse. Some of her neighbors disagree with what she is doing because they think it is dangerous. Things turn bad when she awakes out of sleep to the sound of gunshots. She calls her son who lives nearby. They find that some of her horses are dead, shot and killed. Who could do such a thing?

They Don’t Shoot Horses is a light and easy read, yet filled with mystery, suspense and romance. It is a clean read with no explicit sex or foul language. I couldn’t put it down and read it straight through rather quick. Sara Caudell has done a remarkable job at dropping hints and leaving clues. By the end of the story, I was able to figure out who is behind the killings and the mystery.

It’s an entertaining read with fascinating characters, and a compelling plot. Author, Sara Caudell, weaves a storyline that draws readers in from the very start. She brings a vast amount of knowledge to the story about horses, their training and life on a ranch. I found it to be very refreshing and interesting.

The characters are well developed and thought out. The main character, Susie is a strong woman with a voice of her own. Then we meet Jackie, a young woman that is trying to build her own cutting horse business and center. Soon, their lives collide due to the mysterious shootings and killings of the horses. The relationships and dialog between the characters is well written and composed.

There is a lot going on in this incredible story. Captivated by the descriptions of the scenery and the horses, I felt as if I were there watching on. If you’re a person that loves animals and horses, then you will love They Don’t Shoot Horses. It is a delightful read and the mystery aspect is entertaining and interesting. Sara Caudell is a good writer and I am looking forward to reading more  great books by her.
