Bishop Takes Knight (Redclaw Origins Book 1) by McKenna Dean
Synopsis:
New York, 1955. Former socialite Henrietta (“Rhett”) Bishop, destitute after her father gambles away the family fortune, takes a job at Redclaw Security. But Redclaw is no ordinary operation. Part detective firm and part enforcement agency, Redclaw regulates matters involving the growing population of shifters who have emerged since the onset of the nuclear age.
Peter Knight is a nuclear scientist shattered by the death of his wife. Blacklisted by the government and scientific organizations, he drowns his sorrows while searching for the people behind his wife’s murder.
When Rhett is assigned to recruit Knight, their meeting is more than either bargained for—a rival organization will do anything to secure Knight for themselves. Following a lead to locate a missing cache of alien technology stolen from Redclaw, Rhett is thrown back into her previous glittering life with Knight as her pretend boyfriend. But when someone from the past turns up to start a bidding war on the artifacts, Bishop and Knight wind up in a fight for their very lives.
McKenna Dean’s gripping novel, Bishop Takes Knight, brings together elements of fantasy and romance to create a captivating story that is set in post-World War II America.
It is the 1950s and Henrietta “Rhett” Bishop is struggling to make a living after her father’s death. Her father’s suicide results in the loss of Rhett’s social standing which leaves her with only one friend she can count on. While looking for employment to support herself, Rhett stumbles upon Redclaw Security where she begins to work. Weird happenings around the office make Rhett question Redclaw’s real mission. When a stranger comes to the office and attacks Miss Climpson, Rhett’s colleague, then rummages through the firm’s documents, Rhett stands ready to shoot as she tightens her grip on her gun. However, as the stranger’s fingers begin to turn to claws, Rhett realizes she is dealing with more than she could have ever imagined.
As the first book in the Redclaw Origins series, Bishop Takes Knight sets the pace with brilliantly developed characters. The work opens with a description that explains and contextualizes Rhett’s current state and her need to find a job. It moves forward to include other characters who, despite their unnatural characteristics, seem strangely real. In her novel, McKenna Dean does a great job of balancing the normal and supernatural bits of the story. It describes a secret superhuman group which ordinary citizens are unaware of. The conflict in the story is also well executed with different superhuman groups fighting to gain control of powerful devices that threaten the world’s safety. The subtle romance between Rhett and Knight adds depth to the novel amidst the chaos and conflict in the work. I was totally engaged throughout the entire read and couldn’t put it down.
Bishop Takes Knight by McKenna Dean will resonate with fans of fantasy novels that include a strand of romance. It is adeptly written as it features complex characters and a thrilling storyline.
