Synopsis:

For fortysomething Poppy McAllister, taking a stroll down memory lane in Cape May, New Jersey, isn’t just awkward—it’s deadly.

Newly widowed and stuck in a middle-aged funk, Poppy has been running on cookies, infomercials, and one-sided chats with her cat for months. There’s no way on earth she’s attending her twenty-five-year class reunion—especially after receiving a very bizarre letter from Barbie, the popular cheerleader who taunted her all through high school. At least, not until Poppy’s best friend practically drags her to the event . . .

Using the dreaded homecoming as an excuse to visit her eccentric Aunt Ginny, Poppy vows to leave Cape May with pride and Spanx intact. Too bad Barbie is still the queen of mean at the reunion. And worse, that her dead body is lying right in front of Poppy’s old locker. Singled out as the killer, it’s up to Poppy to confront her past and clear her name. But between protecting her aunt from disaster and tackling a gluten-free diet, can Poppy crack the case before she’s voted “Most Likely to Die” by the murderer?

Review:

Class Reunions Are Murder (A Poppy McAllister Mystery Book 1) by Libby Klein is hands down one of the best cozy mysteries I have read in a long time. It is hilarious, relatable and well-written with fun and endearing characters who I fully connected with, wanted to be friends with, get together and hangout with.

Poppy Blossom McAllister is more than reluctant to attend her twenty-fifth high school class reunion. She is overweight and lacks confidence in herself. However, Poppy’s best friend talks her into going and she makes the decision to travel back to her hometown, along with her cat Fiargo and stays at her quirky Aunt Ginny’s house. The night of the reunion Poppy discovers the dead body of one of her old classmates, a popular cheerleader. Poppy is accused of the murder. What follows is an entertaining and comical mystery story about one woman’s journey to clear her name, find the real killer, all while finding herself. I loved this book, and anyone who loves cozy mysteries filled with LOL narrative, unique characters and a plot that will engage and keep you guessing, will love it too.

Libby Klein is a talented writer with a unique sense of humor. I couldn’t stop laughing and found myself completely caught up in this story. There is so much to it with the emphasis and message about having a positive body image and learning to accept yourself for who you are. It cracked me up listening to Poppy’s thoughts and feelings and all of her struggles were so real and relatable. I felt like I knew Poppy personally – she is an endearing character. All the characters are fabulous, well-developed and interesting. The mystery in this book is one that will have readers going back and forth from one character to the next until the killer is finally revealed – what a surprise!

With a nicely paced intriguing plot, expressive descriptions, fun and likable characters, I am definitely looking forward to reading more of Libby Klein’s amazing books, and more about her main character Poppy Blossom McAllister. I also really enjoyed Poppy’s recipes that are included in this book. I also love books and stories where the main character attends their high school class reunion. We all know how stressful that can be, yet so much fun too! This book is written with imagination, cleverness and the keen ability to perceive and communicate the funny side of things in people and life.

Class Reunions Are Murder (A Poppy McAllister Mystery Book 1) by Libby Klein is one exceptional, humorous and captivating read and is highly recommended by Chick Lit Café to all cozy mystery readers, and to those who love a good laugh while trying to put the puzzles together to solve the mystery of a bizarre murder and all the peculiar people involved.
