An entertaining humorous fiction novel, The Unlikely Adventures of Joe and Nick by Lee Arrowood follows the stories of two boys as they grow up, and whose paths later converge as they become best friends. This is a must read, memorable and engaging story full of excitement and adventure!
Joe Anderson’s story begins near the town of Wayne in rural West Virginia where his family owns a furniture and appliance store. Nick Michaels, on the other hand, grows up outside of the small town of Flora, Mississippi. While Joe’s hilarious pranks involve bees, handling snakes, and learning the laws of electricity, Nick and his brother device ways to side-step and make fun of their irritable step-father. Their escapades evolve as they move to high school and later college for Joe and the air force for Nick, but their adventures remain funny and engaging. While more serious experiences are included, most of the adventures that appear in the novel evoke nostalgic memories of exciting times.
From the settings to the characters and the pace of the novel, each aspect of the story is well-developed to create a thrilling, delightful read. The characters are loveable and witty. They think up outrageous ideas that have humorous consequences. The supporting characters are also impactful in developing the events presented in the novel. The work is comprehensive in its coverage of the characters’ lives moving from their childhood to their adult years as they balance careers with family while maintaining their love for sports. The story is told through the viewpoints of its main characters which further develops the characters by giving an extensive perspective of their personalities. The incidences are suspenseful as the misadventures involve some element of danger laced with fun.
