Our Friendship Matters by Kimberley B. Jones

Leah and Sasha are 17-year-old friends who had been close to one another since elementary school, but as the summer approaches they find their friendship tested in ways they never anticipated.

Following graduation, Sasha’s privileged life and perception of the world around her is suddenly altered when an old childhood friend persuades her to join in a campaign against an injustice after his best friend is killed by a cop.

But joining the protest has unforeseen consequences for Sasha, distancing her from Leah, who becomes jealous of Sasha’s new friends and finds herself on the opposing side, protesting alongside her group of new white friends.

As the tension mounts between the two bitterly opposed factions, a tragedy strikes and threatens to make Sasha and Leah enemies. Can they find a way to resolve their differences, putting them to the side and learn to accept each other’s viewpoints? Or is their long friendship finished for good?

Book review:

Our Friendship Matters by Kimberley B. Jones is a thought-provoking teen and young adult book which comes under diversity and multicultural fiction.  Simply told, this book has a message that needs to be read and discussed, as well as being a heart-warming tale.

Leah and Sasha are childhood friends.  They’ve reached the age of 17 without ever paying attention to the color of their skin.  Prom is finished and college awaits for them at the end of the summer holidays.  Coming from wealthy homes, attending good schools and having boyfriends allows the girls a sense of well-being and a certain remoteness to what goes on outside their world – as with all teenagers, who are getting to grips with discovering who they are.

One last summer together as young people, should have been filled with fun, however, the killing of a young black man has set into motion a series of events that will see the four young friends grow up very quickly.  Sasha is immediately drawn to help with the protests to stand against injustice.  Leah only sees that her best friend is leaving her out.  As the two girls wrestle to get a grip with both their evolving friendship and a changing world, they are exposed to a darker side of protesting.  Under stressful times will their friendship ever be the same again, or is it broken beyond repair?

Kimberley B. Jones writes with a crisp, clear, easy-to-read style that’s very age appropriate.  She touches on the issues of respect, diversity and friendship with careful consideration.  Offering the reader a chance to look at a very sensitive issue from different angles, Jones focuses on being positive, and having a perspective of working together and moving forward. With likable, well-developed characters, authentic narrative and a remarkable storyline which will have readers engaged from start to finish,  Our Friendship Matters by Kimberley B. Jones comes highly recommended by Chick Lit Café. Book reviewed by T N Traynor for Chick Lit Café Book Reviews & Promotion.
