Not Knowing Can Be Lethal

Assaulted, left for dead, and amnesic, the woman who thinks her name is Alex, may be the only surviving victim of a killer who’s targeting prostitutes and leaving their bodies without fingertips to complicate their identification. Denver Homicide Detective Blake Halloran is sure she is connected to the other killings but he can’t identify her, even with her fingertips intact. And she can’t remember anything—including the face or name of the man who tried to kill her.

With each new victim, it becomes more crucial for Alex to remember what happened to her if Blake and his partner are to solve the murders, but how do you force someone to remember? As Blake’s strong attraction to her and his need to protect her grows, so does his uneasiness about the inability to identify her, whether she’s a villain or a victim, and whether her amnesia is real.

Book review:

Finding Alex is a riveting thriller and a gripping love story.  Helen Starbuck does an excellent job balancing a slow growing love story and a high-tension serial killer plot.

The clues are there, so from the offset we can almost guess who the killer is.  What we can’t see is how they will be caught.  He’s meticulous at covering his tracks, to the point of making it extremely hard to identify his victims.  But he’s made a mistake, and one of his victims is still alive.  I really enjoyed how the tension grew throughout the book.  By the end I was on the edge of my seat willing him to get caught.

Alex has been attacked, strangled, hit on the head and left for dead.  Somehow, she wakes and finds the strength to crawl the embankment to the road which Denver homicide detective Blake Halloran is driving along.  From the moment she collapses in his arms, Blake is thrown into a flashback of someone dying in his arms.  Subliminally, his mind latches on to the need to not let this woman die.  From that moment, Blake will do everything in his power to protect her, which becomes more and more difficult as the killer keeps returning to finish the job.  Blake is a deep character, a multi-layered protagonist who wins not only Alex’s heart but the readers too.  Alex, with her amnesia, strong character and fight to remain alive adds depth to this gripping crime mystery.

Helen Starbuck presents us with an extremely well-written original story and incredible romantic suspense.  I was hooked from the very first chapter.  With my pages flying by, I wasn’t able to put it down!  With compelling characters and a suspenseful plot, this is a murder mystery you won’t want to miss!  Finding Alex by Helen Starbuck is a 5 star, must read novel and comes highly recommended by Chick Lit Café Reviews.
