Considered average by his teachers and peers, Max Mead’s life is far from the high-achieving lives of other members of his family. After an unpleasant day at school, Max arrives home and learns of his grandfather’s disappearance. Max and his father, Theodore, travel to Egypt to search for Max’s grandfather who is a famous Egyptian antiquities expert.
Max’s life is fraught with surprises and shocking discoveries, including concealed information about his heritage. Fascinating contents from Max’s grandfather’s cabinet of curiosities make the story intriguing in addition to Max’s impressive ability to connect with objects. Ancient artifacts mentioned in the work also create interest in ancient Egyptian history. As Max learns more details about the disappearance, he unravels secrets and information linked to the antagonists in the book. His role in the story also sheds light on the important themes of antiquity theft and recovery.
Cynthia C Huijgens skillfully tackles other important topics such as bullying, building self-confidence, and family conflict which are relevant to the book’s target readership. Max is bullied at school. The disheartening experiences add to his self-doubt. Being from a high-profile family and the younger brother is a star pupil and Olympic medal hopeful, Max is uncertain of his abilities. In Egypt, he grows from being anxious to becoming brave and self-assured as his confidence grows while he works on solving the mystery of his grandfather’s disappearance. His father’s dispute with his grandfather and his disagreements with Theodore while in Egypt are other significant and very interesting topics explored in the story.
