Unchecked Capitalism is Killing Us!: How unfettered corporate greed and corruption have made us poorer, fatter, sicker, less tolerant of others and more dangerously exposed to the coronavirus.

This book shows in detail how eight specific industries (banks, health care, processed foods/sugar, autos, oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, military contractors and the media) have harmed us over the years, driven by their greed and quest for profits. For example, did you know that:-Drug companies and their lobbyists actually wrote government legislation in 2002 that gave them the unlimited ability to raise future prices on medications? -A Supreme Court ruling in 2010 essentially destroyed our democracy by allowing the wealthy and corporations to spend unlimited amounts of money on bribing and funding politicians.-There are over 100,000 different lobbyists in Washington today, each one trying to control our elected representatives with cash and bribes!-Our US defense budget today is larger than the next nine largest countries’ defense budgets, combined!-Our healthcare is a mess. All hospitals are profit driven. A trip to a hospital today can bankrupt even those of us who are insured.-Until Tesla came along, auto companies were content to produce essentially the same type of polluting car with the same gasoline mileage as the Model T. -There are eight specific US institutions that could normally help protect us during a pandemic. But unchecked capitalism (coupled with corporate greed) has infected all eight institutions, enabling the virus to infect more people here than anywhere else in the world. The problem is much worse than you realize…

Chick Lit Café Book Review

Wake Up! Unchecked Capitalism is Killing Us!, a non-fiction book by Earl B. Rynerson, is at heart an impassioned plea for Americans to become more engaged in taking back the government from big money and corporations. By providing a wealth of background information, historical context, and data, Mr. Rynerson puts the inner workings of lobbyists and special interest groups under a microscope.

Author, Earl B. Rynerson brings his varied professional background of 20 years in the US Air Force, decades working in the technology sector, teaching, and a brief turn in local politics to bear as he holds up a variety of industries to close scrutiny. No one is off the hook, regardless of political affiliation. Mr. Rynerson is as critical of Ronald Reagan’s policies as he is of Bill Clinton’s. He’s also unapologetic when listing the industries and specific corporations who are the worst offenders, again backing his claims with plenty of research and data.

I have to admit that this is not a usual read for me, but with all that is currently going on in the country, I feel that now is the time for us all to become educated. There is a lot to digest in this book, and much of it is new to me, but it certainly gives me plenty to think about. As a consumer, I appreciate the observation about the success of corporations being based solely on annual growth and not on customer support or the value of their product. I also find the cyclical nature of the corporate money/government issue to be especially illuminating. And most compelling, he clearly points out the reasons for the high level of anger that exists in our society today.

Earl B. Rynerson has brought to light the current business practices of industries that touch on our everyday lives – healthcare, financial, technology, oil & gas, telecommunications, and more. By tying in how these practices have created some of our biggest societal woes – drug abuse, poverty, chronic health issues, and poor infrastructure across the country – Mr. Rynerson has created a call to action for us all. This provocative, fascinating book will make you think every time you cast a vote or reach for your wallet. Chick Lit Café highly recommends and gives 5 big stars to Wake Up! Unchecked Capitalism is Killing Us! by Earl B. Rynerson. An outstanding read for all, regardless of your political beliefs! Book read and reviewed by D. L. Smith for Chick Lit Café Books & Reviews.
