One case haunts him. One chance to fix the past. One mistake could cost him everything.

Ex-Minneapolis Police Detective Rembrandt Stone walked away from a career he loved—just the price of being sure he can come home to the wife and daughter he cherishes. But he can’t shake the deep regret over a case left behind.

When his mentor, the former Chief of Homicide dies and leaves Rembrandt with a box of cold cases and a mysterious watch, he finds himself thrust into a world he recognizes—a world from twenty years ago—the same world he’s woken from in a cold sweat a hundred times. But is it a dream, or some kind of twisted reality?

If he solves the case that plagues him, and justice is finally served, will it destroy the life he loves?

Strap in for a mind-bending, time travel thrill ride in Book One of this riveting new series, The True Lies of Rembrandt Stone.

Chick Lit Café Book Review:

Time travel novels can be hit or miss for me, but without a doubt, Cast the First Stone: A Time Travel Thriller by David James Warren is a major hit! The story covers all the bases of a great thriller, building not only a sense of urgency to catch the killer but also creating characters that humanize the story and make you hope that things will turn out all right. The time travel aspect, rather than being jarring, is so well done that it would be impossible to develop the wonderful main character without it.

Having left the police force behind to escape the cases that he couldn’t solve and the victims he couldn’t save, Rembrandt Stone is now a formerly successful author dealing with writer’s block. The memories he’s trying to outrun won’t leave him alone, and they color everything he’s trying to do. To make matters worse, Rem’s former boss, Chief Booker, has recently died and left Rem his unusual watch, which doesn’t seem to work, along with a box full of files from Rem’s unsolved cases. Feeling adrift and trying to ignore the reminders of his failures, Rem decides to get the watch fixed, only to be told by two odd watch repairmen that it is working exactly as it should. Frustrated and confused, Rem starts fiddling with the watch and suddenly finds himself in his past and dealing with his first unsolved case. Rem, assuming that he’s dreaming, intends to take advantage of having the chance to correct his mistakes and deal with all his regrets. But is he really dreaming, and will the changes he makes alleviate the regrets and tragedies he’s trying to avoid?

Rem is the kind of flawed, complex character that you can get behind. He’s single-minded to a fault, impulsive, and sometimes selfish, but his dedication to his job and the victims of the crimes he solves, and his love for his friends and family make him endearing and admirable. The other characters are well-developed and add to the richness of the storyline. The plot is intriguing to me on many levels. Not only was I swept up in the solving of the crime, but Rem’s emotional journey tugged at me, and the time travel component opened up a realm of possibilities that kept me guessing to the end. The authors do a wonderful job of keeping you off-kilter but sweeping you along at the same time – kind of like a really good roller coaster. The red herrings are believable, and the plot twist really grabs you.

Cast the First Stone is the kind of book that you want to read if you don’t have to work in the morning. You’ll find yourself swept off to the past, hoping that Rem can solve the case and quell his demons. A must-read for fans of both crime and time travel stories!  “Cast the First Stone grabs the crime genre by the collar and shows it a thing or two! With time travel, cold cases, and flawed, relatable characters who feel like old friends, this story hooked me from the very first line. Sleep? Who needs sleep? Give me a True Lies of Rembrandt Stone novel. Masterful writing from three powerhouse storytellers.”
-NYT bestselling author Tosca Lee

“Holy what?! DO NOT MISS THIS STORY! David James Warren kills it with this time-travel story that explores regrets and mistakes and the importance of living in the now. I tried explaining to Rembrandt Stone the dangers of messing with the timeline, but would he listen? Of course, not. This was truly a riveting story that gutted me! Now. Where the fluff is book 2? Ronie Kendig, author of the bestselling, award-winning The Tox Files
