Key Mishaps in Lower Dimblebrook: A delightful cozy mystery about village life, gossip – and murder! (Isabelle Darby Cozy Village Mysteries Book 3) by Julie Butterfield

Why would anyone want to kill Donald Babbington, what is the mystery surrounding the missing keys, is there a blackmail plot afoot or did someone intend to catnap Cleopatra?

Yet another murder in the normally tranquil village brings chaos, along with DI Wainwright the stern but delicious detective. Is he still pining for the less picturesque streets of inner-city Manchester, or have The Cotswolds and Issie finally stolen his heart? Will he reprise his role as her knight in shining armor or will Issie become Lower Dimblebrook’s latest fatality?

So many questions but all will be revealed in the latest book in the Isabelle Darby Cozy Village Mystery Series.

 Chick Lit Café book review:

Key Mishaps in Lower Dimblebrook by Julie Butterfield is a thoroughly charming mystery set in the lovely Cotswold area of England. As with all the best cozy mysteries, there are plenty of eccentric characters, a picturesque countryside, glimpses of village life, and grisly murder caused by long-held secrets coming to light. Even though this is the third book in the series, it was easy to slip into the story and read it as a stand-alone. However, because I absolutely loved this one, I wouldn’t mind going back to the first two books, to learn how the various relationships began!

Isabelle Darby, or Issie as she’s known to her friends, seems to have a knack for getting embroiled in murders in her new village. Some of the villagers think she’s brought a crime wave with her, but most of her neighbors look to her now whenever murder raises its ugly head. Despite her best efforts to avoid it, Issie is once more involved when she goes to feed her neighbor Donald’s cat and finds that the key left for her doesn’t work in the door. After calling a locksmith, Issie enters the house and finds that Donald has been killed. The dishy Detective Inspector Dave Wainwright is called in to lead the investigation, which is made difficult with a lack of clues or a motive. Throw in lots of red herrings and a puzzle regarding missing and reappearing house keys, and you have a clever whodunit that will keep you guessing.

If you like the TV show Midsomer Murders (which got a mention!), this is a story for you. I enjoyed the byplay between the big-city DI Wainwright and his locally raised Detective Constable Cotterill, as she serves as his interpreter of village life and keeps him from making too many social gaffes while investigating. I also enjoyed the descriptions of the other quirky characters and how they interact with Issie: Roy, the self-appointed neighborhood watch; Doris, the village gossip queen and Issie’s determined crime fighting sidekick; and Maddy, Issie’s next door neighbor who’s as likely to serve homemade wine out of her teapot, as she is tea.

Julie Butterfield has ticked all the boxes in the writing of this entertaining book. I suggest that you fix yourself a nice cup of tea (or wine) and settle in for an incredible, captivating cozy mystery read.
