The Melancholy Strumpet Master by Zeb Beck
Every weekend, Gilmore Crowell crosses the border into Tijuana’s redlight district. He’s not there for sex; he’s there to save his failing academic career.
Gil’s anthropological study of Tijuana streetwalkers had his dissertation advisor cheering him on. But that was years ago, before his best sources up and vanished. Now, with no connection to the sex worker community, his research has stalled, and the faculty elders are about to kick him out of the grad program. Plus, he’s broke.
He takes a job teaching at a juvenile detention center. The steady income gives him the means to keep making his weekly trips across the border. Now he’s paying the girls to speak with him. In a sudden moment of insight, he realizes that giving them something besides cold hard cash could help him forge a new inroad to the community. But do they want what he’s offering?
“Dialogue is sharp and slicing throughout.” –Publishers Weekly
Chick Lit Cafe Book Review:
Modern literature doesn’t get much better than this—The Melancholy Strumpet Master is a top-of-the-line dark comedy that everyone will be wanting to get their hands on, read and share with others. It is a riveting story that is full of hilarious dialogue, and it virtually begs to be made into a screenplay.
Gilmore Crowell is a grad school anthropology student with an interesting research topic. His study of choice? Prostitutes. He has been working on his dissertation for years but is struggling to make things happen. He finally ends up paying the women just to sit and talk to him, and eventually takes a side job just so that he has the money to pay them. Several things happen to him, and the word “failure” seems to be ingrained in his being. But from beginning to end, this is the story of Gil’s long and wearisome road to success.
The whole book reads like an entertaining TV show or movie, with an incredible plot that revolves a lot around Gil, and adds a lot to the brilliant humour of this unusual story. Gil’s character is oddly and surprisingly relatable, and the conversations he has with some people are downright hilarious. Gil is often used as a punching bag, but he seems to expect it; in fact, Gil is a pretty good definition of “anti-hero.” Even his name fits his character well. But the storyline also has some nice surprises, and the absurdity and hilarity is spot-on. Zeb Beck’s clever writing style, sense of humour and unique storytelling ability is sure to evoke a smile from even the most serious of readers and leave them wanting more.
Sit back and relax because you’re in for a treat. Zeb Beck’s The Melancholy Strumpet Master is a book unlike any you’ve ever read before and comes high recommended by Chick Lit Cafe. Book reviewed by Micah Giordonela for Chick Lit Cafe.
