When Jasper is abandoned by his mother as a young boy, he learns to survive on his own. He is later adopted by a supportive family who care for him and treat him as one of their own. Jasper seemingly does well, thrives and forges a career for himself. However, his traumatic earlier years catches up with him and along with his seasonal depression, he is pushed to the edge and almost loses it. Jasper is taken to a hospital after attempting suicide. He then attempts to escape from hospital. A stranger, Freddie, finds Jasper and rescues him. Freddie takes him to Arizona to a Yaqui family where there is hope to find both spiritual and mental healing.
Angels Landing is a meticulously crafted story that follows Jasper’s life, examining his fears and struggles as an underage boy living in an unstable home, and later, as a youth trying to find a sense of belonging. After his mother’s departure, he moves with different immigrant groups in California, which is his home state, but later moves to Colorado with his adoptive family. The story explores the joy and the sense of security he derives from becoming part of a family, his fear of abandonment continues to plague him, as he journeys to find peace.
Trey Sienne Olneya vividly captures the story’s cultural and environmental setting. The novel includes captivating descriptions of the Yaqui people’s culture and stories of their origin and history. The beauty of the unwinding and winding of a Yaqui Maypole is used to paint an intriguing image of how each person’s life is expanded and made complete by their relationships with other people. The various settings included are described in striking detail that capture their natural beauty from the expansive ocean views in southern California to Arizona’s golden desert sunlight. Spanish and Yaqui words included throughout add depth and interest to this incredible unique story.
Fresh, rounded characters develop the story’s themes of love, friendship and finding family in unlikely places. Jasper encounters Ammon, a man trying to come to terms with unimaginable loss and who becomes Jasper’s adoptive father. His adoptive sister struggles to accept him at first but later they form a close, deep bond. Initially devastated and alone, Jasper finds family through adoption and the friendships he forms with Freddie and the Yaqui family who help him find healing.
