In this laugh-out-loud fantasy, readers will enjoy Never Trust a Dragon by Eviatar Avni with its enlightened dragon and the selfish whims of King Sorin.
When King Sorin decides he wants to kill the emperor, he asks Alfi, the dragon he’s kept hidden, to help him with the task. The problem is that Alfi has recently decided to assess the impact his life has on the world; he’s decided to become vegetarian and ethical. Alfi, therefore, is unwilling to kill innocent women and children or any soldiers who aren’t actively fighting. King Sorin handles this news with the aplomb of a dramatic two-year-old who doesn’t get his way. As Alfi goes to create a business for himself, he begins to change the mindsets of many of the villages around the kingdom. The women, for example, begin to request equal respect and treatment in a highly patriarchal society. King Sorin handles these changes with the maturity of a two-year-old as well.
Told in a satirical, laugh-out-loud style, readers will enjoy the dichotomy of each character and the way their actions and behaviors impact the plot. This world, while fantasy, reeks of a life not too long ago when men and their whims dominated. And yet, Alfi the dragon, after his recent reawakening, is as loveable as a young puppy with a heart of gold. He’s the most loveable character as he continues to seek enlightenment and use his growth for business purposes—a delightful, hilarious combination. I enjoyed the flow of this storyline and the way the author used satire and dry humor to meet their end goals. The writing in this story is lyrical, engaging, and has interesting twists and turns that are unexpected. I think many adult readers will find this book engaging!
With writing as unique and unexpected as a sudden rainbow, Never Trust a Dragon by Eviatar Avni is a wonderful read. I loved the original plotline and the highly unusual characters.
