All Our Yesterdays by Eleanor Wells
An artistic free spirit must grapple with her sense of identity as the music she inspires her boyfriend to make propels him to stardom at the turn of the twenty-first century.
It’s the summer of 1999 in rural Minnesota, and eighteen-year-old Marcy Lewis is at a crossroads. Having graduated high school without committing to college, she wonders about the meaning of her life and what she is meant to achieve. On a trip with her sister to New York City, she meets up-and-coming musician Cole Hargrove, and the spark between the two of them is instantaneous. After Cole is inspired to write songs about her, he becomes one of the biggest names in music. As Marcy is thrust into a world of wealth and fame unlike anything she’s ever known, she finds herself torn between her sense of identity and status as one of pop’s greatest muses.

With love at first sight, music, and a hopeful future…Eleanor Wells takes readers on a realistic exciting romantic journey in her beautiful debut novel, All Our Yesterdays.
When newly graduated 18-year-old Marcy takes a trip to New York City with her sister, she finds herself at a restaurant with live music. She’s quickly drawn to the subject making the music—a handsome young man named Cole with a clean voice and a gift for the guitar. Marcy and Cole meet and are instantly drawn to one another. As they try to make it work long-distance between Minnesota and New York, what starts sweet and slow soon becomes quick and passionate, with Cole creating nearly a whole album about her. As Cole’s popularity grows, their love blossoms and withers off and on. Can they really make their relationship work?
One of the things that this incredible author realizes is that music captures memories—it’s timeless; creativity isn’t just beautiful in the moment. As Wells writes about the lovers’ relationship, she releases all the emotions that come with dating a popular musician. Marcy experiences joy, happiness, love, and darker sides. She has jealousy and self-doubt and questions many of her choices. As a couple, she and Cole face difficult gossip, rumours, paparazzi, old secrets brought out, and worse—deathly threats. Marcy is a very patient and forgiving character, and it takes her a while to build her self-confidence, but with a relationship full of complexities, it’s easy to see why.
All Our Yesterdays is incredibly well-written and thought-provoking. Eleanor Wells truly delves into what it might be like to be in a romantic relationship with a musician, flaws and all, and has carefully thought-out Marcy’s curious and interesting life from her high-school graduation and there on. It’s a wonderfully unique and thoughtful read that ends bitter-sweet—the best kind of book there is.
