SOS Podcasts by Rosamaria Mancini is an enjoyable, charming and entertaining read filled with humorous, interesting and touching accounts of the author’s life as she struggles, adjusts, and has times of joy as she was uprooted and moves from one country to another. Italy and Germany seem to be on opposite ends of the spectrum. One is slow and messy, the other swift and efficient. So, moving from one to the other isn’t exactly a smooth transition, especially for this anxious woman.

Moving from New York to Italy was already hard enough, and she had just gotten used to the country before her husband got assigned to the land of bread and sausage, AKA Germany. With only annoying military wives for company, Mancini finds herself unable to bloom where she’s been planted. The only thing that brings her solace in her unsavory situation is listening to—you guessed it— oh-so-holy podcasts. The voices of people saying exactly what they think and feel about things brings a sweet taste of relatable relief to Mancini’s muddled soul. This is a remarkable, original and refreshing memoir. I loved it and could not put it down.

Mancini is someone who is highly aware of her faults but is unable to change, much to her readers’ amusement. She takes full control of her own narrative, making no apologies as she details what it’s like to be a misplaced American-Italian placed in middle-of-nowhere Germany. She’s funny and smart, and you can almost hear her insistent voice as you read. It’s easy to see why podcasts became a vice for her as she draws comparisons between her life and podcasters’ stories. Many women, moms, and worriers will relate easily to Mancini whether they’ve moved to another country or not.

This is a delightfully amusing romp of an autobiography that’s relatable and laughable. It’s a fun listen-in on the author’s own (written) podcast—of sorts!
