A breathtaking page-turning romantic suspense story, Our Beautiful Mess by BK Clark has all the magnificent beauty and excitement of a growing romance with the added apprehension and fear of a suspense with a disturbing unrelenting dark presence and threat. This is the best romantic suspense I have read in well over a year.

When Claire (Madeline by birth) meets a very moody Danny at the airport bar, neither of them thought they would see each other again. Or maybe more accurately, both parties hoped they would never meet again. But, when Danny uses Claire’s shoulder as a pillow on the long flight across the US, Claire realizes the angry man is more a man who has been deeply hurt. Danny is flying home after hearing his wife Jessica had been cheating on him – and not just during their marriage, but also while they were dating. Claire is looking to escape the severe expectations of her wealthy parents, as well as the madness wrought upon her by her now dead husband’s memorial service. While Claire and Danny are both looking to escape their pasts, they cannot help but be drawn to each other over and over again—especially as Claire begins to experience truly terrifying visits that include haunting messages written in blood.  As Claire works to escape her past, and as she finds herself amidst great fear, Danny’s protective instincts kick in, which causes him to grow all the more closer to Claire and closer to the realization that he cannot live without her in his life. The question is whether either of them are ready for that kind of commitment after everything they’ve both recently been through.

BK Clark writes an impeccable story.  The vast, stunning setting of the picturesque island of Solsken, lent itself to romance right off the bat. I loved both Claire and Danny’s tender and vulnerable yet sassy characters—especially when they were together. BK Clark did such a great job creating well-developed characters with a slow build for their growing attraction to each other that kept me in such a state of excitement and anticipation. I loved their support networks and the Swedish culture that surrounded the storyline as well. The additional part of the storyline with the creepy messages and vandalism really kept me reading and guessing how Claire would get to escape her haunting past. After building the story in a perfect arc, the story’s ending was so satisfying and sweet. I loved the way BK Clark gave each character their turn in the limelight and gave each of them some closure before the book ended.

A beautiful story of love, tenderness, support, and overcoming one’s past, Our Beautiful Mess by BK Clark is a well-told, deeply rich novel that readers will not be able to put down.
