K9 Mine by Shannon MacLeod is a delightful read that follows a diligent police officer, Travis McLean. He yearns to follow in his parents’ footsteps of becoming a K9 officer. However, Travis’ world is thrown into chaos when he crosses paths with Saoirse, a faery who escapes the clutches of a power-hungry warrior, Ansgar. As Travis helps the faery to adjust to the modern world, the two end up becoming ‘partners-in-crime’. The tensions are high, as Travis ends up being drawn into an ancient supernatural battle, while trying to protect the fate of the faery.
The premise of this story is refreshing, as MacLeod blends magic and shapeshifting abilities into law enforcement drama. Ancient Celtic mythology is woven throughout that makes the tale feel unique and electric.
Shannon MacLeod’s character development is excellent, fitting well into the brisk pacing of the story. Ansgar, the blood-thirsty druid, hunts down Saoirse, who is nothing more than property to him. His threat encompasses the book as he bears down on our protagonists. Travis MacLean is a natural hero as he instantly becomes a protector to Saoirse. Even though he is daunted by the prospect, he still rises to the occasion as it is his mortal duty. Meanwhile, Saoirse, despite being a ‘fish-out-of-water’, is strong-willed and intelligent. Rather than being a ‘damsel-in-distress’ she adapts quickly to her new environment. The chemistry between these two characters is sincere as their connection deepens. Travis and Saoirse learn new life lessons, growing within themselves while they both discover the greatest magic of all; Love.
K9 Mine wonderfully mixes history and fantasy together, with a splash of mystery, romance and adventure. Shannon MacLeod gleefully takes the K9 partner’s trope and twists it into a magical shapeshifting ride. I really hope that there is more in this series, as the concept is full of potential with lots of different ways to expand upon it.
