Lee Ann McChristian’s The Basement Angel is a profound work of Christian fiction of how God’s grace can cut through years of bitter pain to bring redemption to a broken soul.

Set against the harsh backdrop of North Texas, a cold front rips across the landscape, mirroring the grief that rages within one man’s heart. The 63-year-old widower has spent 14 years wracked by resentment and torment, after losing his wife and young daughter to a drunk driver. His negative thoughts are consuming him as he pushes everyone away and wants nothing to do with God, blaming Him for everything.

Desperation drives him to breaking point, as his plight compels him to rob a bank. The brutal ice storm forces him to hide in the basement of a family’s home. Trapped and injured, the widower encounters a young girl, Janie, who is also going through the recent loss of her father. God uses the 10-year old’s unwavering faith to show His grace as an escape from all the agony. Highlighting the magnitude of God’s power through the smallest form adds a beautiful poignancy to the story that will resonate deeply with readers.

Lee Ann McChristian is an excellent writer and storyteller. She showcases contrasting perspectives from the characters in a complex manner.  You can empathize with both sides perfectly, Janie’s steadfast trust in God and the man’s bristling anger. Neither view is dismissed but are given equal respect to give rich understanding. It’s a refreshing angle and is unapologetically honest in showing the brutal hardships of life.

This personally made the story a powerful read,and  it was also inspiring, It raised my own questions about the injustice of the world. However, as a Christian it served as a powerful reminder that while life is cruel and can be unfair; God counterbalances that by His immeasurable goodness, love and justice.

The Basement Angel is a bold testament that no matter how lost or broken we are, God can still find us and bring healing to our weary lives.
