Raving Reviews:
“Muunokhoi’s Awakening by Gilbert Arthur is a thoughtful read that takes the classic fable as a premise and expands on it, asking deep philosophical questions about identity and survival. Arthur uses the life of a marmot to explore meaningful themes that are at the heart of all species, human and animal alike. (It) is a perfect read for nature/animal-lovers, as it’s imaginative while also being informative. I’ve always enjoyed reading stories about animals as they’re intriguing and can usually provide an allegory to society. This one is the best I have ever read. Muunokhoi’s Awakening by Gilbert Arthur comes recommended by CLBC Book Reviews.”-Book reviewed by Caroline Hayes for CLBC-Book Reviews.

“Muunokhoi’s Awakening is a strikingly original tale… a rich, anthropomorphic adventure that’s both literal and deeply metaphorical, exploring identity, purpose, and the meaning of community. …(It) is a deeply unique story that somehow manages to be an animal adventure, philosophical fable, and heartwarming romance all at once. It’s perfect for readers who enjoy books like Watership Down or The Wind in the Willows, but want something more introspective and slightly modern in tone. If you’re a fan of stories that blend humor with heart and challenge you to see the world (and yourself) a little differently, this one’s worth waking up for.” -Literary Titan; ★★★★★

“Arthur’s brilliant novel opens underground, in the stillness of a marmot colony buried deep beneath the snow. There, Muunokhoi, a large, intelligent tarbagan marmot, awakens too early from hibernation. With the world above still locked in winter and his family asleep and unreachable, Muunokhoi must make a harrowing choice: remain and starve, or abandon his home in search of food and survival. ……Readers expecting a fast-paced animal adventure may find the philosophical digressions slow, but those who embrace the story’s quiet depth will be rewarded with a rich, memorable reading experience. A stunner.”-The Prairies Book Review ★★★★★

Muunokhoi’s Awakening by Gilbert Arthur is a unique story that uses the life of a marmot to explore themes of survival and identity. Readers inhabit the life of Muunokhoi, a marmot that lives high up in the Mongolian mountains. Through the eyes of this humble creature, this animal-fable turns into a deeply profound and adventurous tale. …(It)is a quietly profound tale that goes beyond a simple fable. This is a perfect fit for readers who enjoy Watership Down, as it offers reflections on society from a different perspective. An engaging page-turner and suitable to be called a classic in the truest sense.”
