Twenty-five years after the crucifixion, Mary Magdalene leads a double life as Jesus’s disciple and Susannah, the wealthy heir of an international import/export business in incense and perfume. But someone is watching, her two identities threaten to merge and she must flee Jerusalem. Her journey begins with voices and visions that first drag her into the past and then propel her forward, through the temples of strange gods, across deserts and seas, to experience a near death experience, an unexpected initiation and a dangerous storm at sea. Her outer journey reflects the inner as Magdalene grapples with tradition and duty to discover her heart’s desire.

Review:

Magdalene A.D. by Christine Irving is a beautiful work of fictional literature based on the life of Mary Magdalene, of the bible. The time is twenty-five years after the death of Christ, and Magdalene is on a journey, both physical and deeply spiritual. Especially touching and very entertaining, readers will not want this story to end. As Mary Magdalene leads a double life, she finds that she must flee Jerusalem. She journeys through dusty strange places and has life threatening experiences. Through it all, the wisdom she gains is informed and strengthened by the diverse resilient women she meets along the way. This book is about the development of Magdalene’s inner spiritual perspective as she journeys and goes about healing, teaching and more.

The historical details in Magdalene A.D. are extremely factual and highly researched. Everything from the pots and pans to the landscapes are featured in the light of true history and are brought to vivid life. The descriptive writing is phenomenal and absolutely a delight for the imaginary senses. I felt like I was there, on the scene, watching on as the story unfolded.

The character development is brilliant, as is the storyline and plot. The emphasis on Magdalene’s spiritual journey as it parallels her physical one, brought to life the entire story, and made a real impact on me. It is inspiring and enlightening and I was fully engaged and captivated by this fabulous one-of-a-kind story. It is beautifully written and I didn’t want to put it down. It has to be one of the best historical fiction novels, based on a character in the bible that I have ever read. Magdalene A.D. by Christine Irving is a journey of revelation, insight, wisdom, acceptance, open-mindedness, and in conclusion, appreciation and understanding. Highly recommended by Chick Lit Cafe!
