Chick Lit Café Book Review:

The Pretender is the first novel from new author Katie Ward, I hope, and I am sure, this will not be the last!  This is a beautiful re-telling of ‘The Prince and the Pauper’, only set in modern day and being a swap between a princess and a destitute young lady.  As such, this is a marvelous book for young adults, and girls especially are going to fall in love with it, as I did myself, I can see it becoming a classic, and a treasured book for many young girls. This is a beautiful read, I really enjoyed it.

Mark Twain’s The Prince & the Pauper published in 1881, depicts a critique of social inequality and a criticism of judging others by their appearance.  It seems sad to think that 138 years later the story still rings as true as ever.  Katie Ward does a marvelous job of re-creating this very famous tale in modern day France.

I fell in love with the story as soon as I started reading, and this was one of those books that I just couldn’t put down until I’d read the last page.  It is so sweet and lovely, and yet at the same time showing some injustices still prevalent in our society.  Although, it appears that Princess Isabella is rather spoilt, she is still endearing and kindhearted.  In contrast, Sophia and her sisters have had a terrible upbringing.   A chance encounter one night puts into place a quick decision to swap places, what results are the personal growth of both young ladies.  I really enjoyed the changes to this traditional tale, especially the love that blossoms for both of them, and an ending that is truly a happy-ever-after.

Katie Ward has a smooth, easy-to-read writing style, which allows you to race through the pages with ease and comfort.  In fact, when I had finished, I had that glow of a beautiful-story-aftermath, and I understand how this book is winning awards.  This would make a great adaptation to movie screen or mini TV series. With wonderful well-developed characters, an amazing thought-provoking, captivating and engaging storyline and beautiful, vivid descriptive writing, The Pretender by Katie Ward comes highly recommended by Chick Lit Café. ~Book review by T N Traynor for Chick Lit Café. – Don’t miss out on this one-of-a-kind amazing read.
