Black Souls by Sabina Gabrielli Carrara

She erased her past only to discover it was all a lie.

Lola never met her father, and her mother took her own life when she was still a toddler. Raised by her aunt Mara, a callous woman who never showed any affection towards her niece. As soon she turns 18, Lola moves to Malta where she meets her future husband, Fergus. The two of them will ultimately build their dream life in Ireland. Lola’s past seems forever forgotten, until the day her aunt Mara dies under suspicious circumstances and her cousin Giulia vehemently discourages her from being involved. Uncertain about what to do, in the end, Lola flies over to Ponte Alto with her husband. The old town had not changed much, and neither had the twisted dynamics inside the Kopfler family. Lola is transported back twenty years, and the ancient feeling of being an outsider is back. But that is not all: her presence is a threat to someone; someone who doesn’t hesitate to leave a trail of blood behind to keep their secrets safe. The events unfold a spider web of evil acts, lies, and a truth that is far crueler than anyone can imagine, and soon Lola and Fergus find themselves at the center of a killer hunt. What they cannot imagine is that the search for the truth will bring them back to Dublin. The vicious attack of their neighbor and friend, in fact, is some way connected to the savage murders in Ponte Alto, but how? Inspector Furio Zamparelli and Detective Enda McCarthey will have to join forces and start a race against the clock to stop the killings. The deception of the powerful Kopfler family had started. There is no coming back: Will Lola be spared?

Review:

Black Souls is a captivating murder mystery novel with shocking twists and turns that’ll pique your interest until the end. The author, Sabina Gabrielli Carrara, has woven a tale of intrigue filled with old-world charm and deadly secrets of a powerful Italian family, owners of the prestigious Kopfler Grand Hotel in Ponte Alto.

The old regime has passed the running of the stately hotel over to a new generation. Mara retired the previous year and officially turned over the control of the family business, The Kopfler Grand Hotel, to her daughter Giulia. When deadly deeds from the past resurface and threaten the family name the mother and daughter are on opposing sides with knives drawn. One looking for penance for her black soul and the other protecting the family name and coffers. Who will win in this deadly showdown and at what costs?

The author, Sabina Gabrielli Carrara breathes life into the characters giving them a multidimensional appearance with each acting out the script before them. For example, in the qualities and traits of Lola, you’ll sense her losses from childhood, the emotional trauma from living with her Aunt Mara, to the love she now shares with her husband and his family. Her innocence is relevant as mischief encroaches to destroy her happiness in deadly portions.

Black Souls unfolds at a steady-pace with snippets of new information a detective would pounce upon to solve a crime as do Inspector Furio Zamparelli and Detective Enda McCarthey when faced with solving three murders all pointing toward the powerful Kopfler family.

The chromatic scenes and descriptive phrasing are carefully selected to build the luxurious world of the Kopfler family and are expedient in moving the scenes from one to the other. The moods are cast with the weather as a harbinger of things to come. The reflections on the characters’ faces are paramount for discovering their inner conflict or ignorance of their situation.

About the time you think you’re into the flow of things, recognize the characters and their attributes and downfalls, then intrigue is dropped into your lap and you have no idea, although you want to know, who’s joined the players in this suspenseful story.

Read Black Souls today and enjoy this tangled web of deceit that defines the Kopfler’s prestigious name. Black Souls by Sabina Gabrielli Carrara is a 5 star read and highly recommended by Chick Lit Café. Book reviewed by CJ Bowen for Chick Lit Café.
