At the Beginning, in the Blues by Virginia Bond

As the story opens, Shea is preparing for her wedding. She’s a landscape photographer who has moved from Manchester, England to America to marry Cal, a man she barely knows. At the reception, she meets Alex, a friend of her new husband. He seems overly concerned for her, and she’s surprised that he claims Cal never mentioned her until recently. Soon they move to a new town, and Shea finds herself cut off from everyone she knows and from her dream of opening the gallery Cal promised her. He becomes physically and mentally abusive and threatens to kill her if she tries to leave. She sneaks off on a day trip into the Blue Mountains and realizes she’s caught what looks like a small, deformed fairy on camera. She’s ecstatic and tries to show her discovery to Cal, but he ridicules her. It makes their relationship even worse. Alex finally reveals the real reason Cal married Shea, and the two must devise a plan to save her life.

When Pixie realizes she was seen, she is terrified that her hive might be in danger. Already ridiculed because of her deformity, she knows this slip-up will make her position even worse. In addition, Pixie uncovers that a neighboring hive is planning to take over the whole area and kill Kalen, her childhood friend and the king’s son. What they want most, however, is something of great power that has been kept secret for years. When she discovers its true identity, it’s up to Pixie to decide if she will use it to save the human woman who saw her or her family.

Book review:

At the Beginning, in the Blues by Virginia Bond is a spellbinding, whimsical tale that captures the imagination and transports you back to childhood dreams and innocence.

This creative book feels like two completely different stories told side-by-side.  On one side, we meet Shea and follow her life as she moves from England to America to marry a man she hardly knows.  On the other side, we read about Pixie – who despite the name is a Fairy, lonely and mostly rejected by everyone else in the hive of her home.  As the dramas of their lives unfold, we watch as they move towards each other bringing reality and legend to merge.

On her romantic wedding day Shea gets the first glimpse of what Cal is really like under his masked smile.  All too soon she realizes she has jumped the gun and finds herself in a place of no return.  Her so called friend, Joan seems distant and the only person showing any concern about her is Cal’s handsome friend Alex.  A stranger in a foreign land, people look with sympathy but don’t get involved when bruises start appearing.

Disfigured Pixie hides out in the glen to find peace, longing to be loved for who she is.  Unaware of how special she is and the important role she will play in saving the Fairy home in the Blue Mountains.  Her story is touching as we watch her love Prince Kalen from a distance.

Almost losing the will to live, Shea is given unexplainable hope, when she accidentally takes a photograph of Pixie.  In the land of Fairies danger threatens from neighboring hives and no one believes Pixie when she tells them what she’s overheard.  Will they believe her in time?  And will she be able to save Shea?

Virginia Bond has a lovely, smooth story-voice and a wonderful imagination; she grabs your interest, pulling you into her mysterious yet magical story.   With well-developed incredible characters and a captivating plot, At the Beginning, in the Blues by Virginia Bond is a tender fantasy mixed with women’s drama and abuse and comes highly recommended by Chick Lit Café.
