My Experience at the Hotel by Ricardo John is a quick, lighthearted dive into the life of employees working in the hotel industry. Full of tips and ideas, this is ideal for hotel owners and managers.
In 2013, it was recorded that 102 million people worked within the travel and tourism industry, at that time in history it was the fastest growing and most profitable industry in the world – this information is picked up inside the book. With this in mind, the author has compiled a list of suggestions he feels would improve guest stay (therefore reducing complaints) but most importantly, cut down on employee stress.
The 6 guidelines on how to handle guest conflict (complaints and difficult situations) are extremely insightful. The advice on avoiding ‘triggers’ and offering an empathetic ear, could be applied to anyone’s job not just the hotel industry. The other list that stood out to me was the 10 housekeeping rules, these are really very good; in my younger days I worked as a hotel housekeeper for many years, so I see the value and truth in these rules. The list of things that raise stress levels for hotel staff was not only educational but very funny.
