An incredibly thrilling book that is not for the faint of heart or squeamish

Book review:

Sharp, snappy, and anything but subtle, Without Direction by E.N. Crane is an intriguing book that will hold you in its grasp from beginning to end. If you’ve ever wanted to see violent abusers get their just desserts then this is the story for you. It certainly doesn’t pull any punches and makes for very compelling reading.

Our hero, Bridgette Ampersand, is a glasses-wearing optometrist who takes on the role of vigilante with great ardor. Seeking men who are hurting women after her own fateful experience with violence, Bridgette puts herself in the path of these vicious characters over and over again. It’s quite terrifying and I found myself wishing she would take a break. But, that’s not how superheroes work!!

Adding to the perpetual and, seemingly, never-ending violence is the brutally honest rendition of the protagonist’s perseverance and dedication to her chosen ‘other’ life. Bridgette has the ability to know what others are thinking and she uses this power with gusto!

I can see why some readers might find this a challenging read. The subject matter is not for the faint-hearted, and the writing style is unexpected, powerful and even startling. However, I loved this story and the way the author deliberately used this particular method of writing to keep her readers in a state of unrest. Victims of abuse live in a state of anguish never knowing if they’ll be attacked again and it is as if the author wanted her readers to get an idea and an appreciation of that feeling. As well, some victims of violence may find comfort in this tale, as the perpetrators are dealt with swift justice, first testament style, by a strong woman with whom they can identify with. Bridgette plays two opposing roles, a vigilante and an Optometrist, and she is a powerful tool for good. As well, she’s a funny woman with a very serious job to do.

The ending of this brilliant book is mysterious and leaves the reader with some thought-provoking questions, and definitely wanting more from this author. I’m sure readers will find this to be a fascinating tale. Without Direction by E.N. Crane is an incredibly thrilling novel and comes highly recommended by Chick Lit Café. Book reviewed by Susan Day for Chick Lit Café Book Reviews.
