Alan C. Williams is a widely published Australian author, concentrating mainly on women’s magazines, where he pushes the boundaries way past ‘boy meets girl’ love stories. He has had over forty short stories published in Australia’s That’s Life, many of them included in The Rain, the Park and Other Things, his first collection. Since 2012, he has had stories published in Ireland, Canada and Britain, where he is also a regular contributor to Take a Break magazine. His quirky tales cover crime, fantasy, science fiction, romance and thrillers, usually set in the here and now. He has vowed never to write a western. Despite being both male and Australian, he is a member of the RNA (Romantic Novelists Association). It seems that, like many of his stories, the impossible is possible after all. Alan is a retired science teacher, currently exiled and living in France, residing in a seventeenth-century stone farmhouse with his long-suffering wife, Anne, and maniacal cat, Zorro. Chick Lit Café Book Review for The Rain, the Park & Other Things by Alan C. Williams

The Rain, the Park & Other Things by Alan C. Williams is an interesting collection of short stories, which is bound to provide the reader with a lot of entertainment. The great appeal of this book is that many of the short stories focus on something unique and special, and the reader will find them relatable, fun and thought-provoking.

Centered around the Australian climate, Williams uses interesting aspects of southern hemisphere weather as his muse and as a starting point to launch his tales. This collection from Downunder will charm and enthrall all those who read it. As an Australian, myself, I was able to see my country through a different lens; one which showed me that at the heart of any great nation are stories about ordinary people achieving extraordinary things.

The author has a unique ability to create convincing conversations, something not all authors have. He uses this to develop realistic characters. It is as if we are overhearing conversations played out right within earshot. As well, his use of first-person narrative helps the reader feel immediately at ease and wanting to know more.

In kaleidoscope, we are immediately drawn into the story by the dreamlike description of thousands of butterflies massing together and the ensuing conversation between two friends. I laughed out loud at the Meerkat Conspiracy and was on the edge of my seat reading, The Day Leeton Vanished.

I’m sure readers will love this collection regardless of where they come from in the world as it speaks to us about our own humanity and love of life. It is well-written and entertaining. I imagine office workers picking out a story on their lunch break like one might pick off a single grape and eat it. While retirees might dive in and consume the whole book in one sitting. Whatever way you choose to devour this book, you won’t regret it. Do yourself a favor and grab a copy today. The Rain, the Park & Other Things by Alan C. Williams comes highly recommended by Chick Lit Café.
