A Kind of Hush examines how life is seldom a tidy affair exploring whether there is a gray area between right and wrong. Matt and Summer Mackie with children Willa and Gabe are enjoying a June outing at nearby Zoar Valley Gorge, an area showcasing waterfalls, forests, shale cliffs, and a whitewater creek running through the ravine, when tragedy strikes. One parent survives along with their teenage daughter and seven-year-old son found hiding in the nearby woods. Was this a tragic accident or something more heinous, and if so, whodunnit and whydunit?

Set in Buffalo, New York, and in the Big Bend area of Texas, the heart of the novel centers on how survivors deal with the circumstances and subsequent revelations surrounding the incident. But as each one begins to piece together the events of that day a mantle of ambiguity—a kind of hush—hangs between them like a live grenade without its pin.

Chick Lit Cafe’s Book Review:

An incredible, powerful suspense novel that examines the meaning of family and the depth of loss and grief, A Kind of Hush by JoDee Neathery involves a possible murder attempt and a family’s courage in the face of tragedy.

A mother dies in a horrific accident that almost shatters her family. Earlier, the family had lost their young boy to another devastating incident. As other relatives rally around the family, the Erie County Sheriff’s Department works to piece together details of the case. Their investigation leads to a suspected sex offender. The man becomes a fugitive who tries to throw off the police as he also pursues a personal mission involving his own family.

At its core, the book is not only about the case, but it also delves into the complex dynamics that form within a family, the crushing grief that emerges from loss, and the possibility of recovery. It contains an engaging array of characters; many are funny, endearing, inspiring, and interestingly complex. The women featured are capable, loyal, and insightful. They inspire hope and use their strength to rebuild a broken family that is at the edge of despair. The Mackie household is imperfect, their struggles are relatable and their unity is heart-warming. Despite the losses that they have suffered, they find the strength to move forward together. The writing is flawless, weaving together the history of the places the story is set with the lives of the characters and the fascinating discoveries that emerge from the case. Light-hearted conversations enliven the scenes while the mystery in the book adds anticipation and excitement. The story is not only stirring and quite thrilling, but it also contains wisdom and practical life lessons covered through the simple, sensible and clever perspective of its youngest character.
