The Deck of the Numinon by GJ Scherzinger
With a turn of the cards, a Stone Giant breaks loose from the Granite Mountains, leaving a path of destruction through the Regency of the Stands. The fabled guard towers of Safrasco are destroyed by a sorcerous griffin, the threat of war rising in its wake. Captain Ferriman turns to a blind herb trader named Cerra Meadows in the hopes she can help him navigate the sorcerous paths that threaten the peace of the Empire.
The Cards are drawn, the cast put into play. The Deck is ruled by the majics that created it. Events take on a life of their own, reliant on the strengths and motivations of the players whose avatars are determined by the draw. The Queen of Quills represents qualities that Cerra must embrace in order to discover the identity of the Seer and locate the Cards before her world runs out of Time.
CLC’s Book Review
The Deck of the Numinon by GJ Scherzinger is an epic adventure filled with fantasy and beautifully illustrated worlds that pop right off the pages!!
A mysterious world surrounded by magic. A battle for dominance and control. And females living in convents to train as shapeshifters. These are the just a few of the layers of the expertly crafted world in The Deck of the Numinon. The deck of cards is central to this layered plot; the deck has the power to manipulate people as well as time. When the deck falls into the wrong hands, the well-spring of the plot follows. Military forces from multiple different kingdoms begin to head to war, but one general pulls in Cerra, a girl without training, to help ferret out information. Cerra doesn’t know that she or her lover are physical representations of the cards in this game; but as they enter farther into their journey, they discover that their mission goes far beyond just spying.
This book is unlike any fantasy I’ve read in a very long time. The plot is layered to perfection and while the world is completely intriguingly foreign, GJ Scherzinger has such adept ways of bringing both the story and the characters to life that the details no longer feel foreign and become extraordinarily real. The plot is so intriguing and involved, and the author has also woven side schemes and backstories that kept my interest even more. Somehow, each character felt completely new—their characteristics were unique and so well described that I felt like I knew them well.
Readers who enjoy Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings, will love this novel. Its multi-dimensional world and interesting characters are so well crafted that this novel is hard to put down and will keep you turning the pages late into the night. Highly recommended!!
