In Marie Montine’s stirring and poignant romance novella, Red River, a woman is drawn to the poems in a journal she stumbles upon in a grocery store and commits to finding the journal’s owner. With a multilayered main character and fascinating, suspenseful scenes, this story was captivating and gripping from start to finish.

After years of being away, Maddy Harlow returns to Red River, hoping to persuade her grandmother to move back with her to San Francisco so that Maddy can take care of her. While in Red River, she finds a journal with poems that catch her attention and decides to find out the writer of the collection. Despite Red River’s tranquility, Maddy is set on returning to her life in San Francisco even if that means facing her abusive ex-boyfriend.

Marie Montine has penned a spell-binding story with an intriguing main character and well-crafted secondary characters. Maddy is a courageous lead character who is determined to face her past and find the peace and love she longs for through her grandmother’s support. Their bond is beautifully explored through the engaging conversations they have during her stay and their shared experiences in the beautiful town.  Her life in San Francisco and Red River are skillfully woven together through her experiences. The poems contained in the journal are compelling with captivating imagery and engaging rhythms. Suspense arises in the book as Maddy wonders about the meaning of each poem and decides to find out who wrote them. Red River is fascinating with a wonderful community and picturesque landscapes that form an enchanting setting for the story. The book’s pace is swift, and still includes enough information to describe its beautiful scenes and characters in detail. The romance in the story is authentic and its action scenes are tensive and unexpected. Marie Montine is a masterful storyteller whose incredible writing drew me in and held my attention from the start to the end.

Red River by Marie Montine is a wonderful romance and a riveting suspense novella with unforgettable characters, an incredible setting, and a rewarding ending.
