Some doors, once opened, cannot be closed…

Following the departure of her only friend, Drew starts having strange dreams which feature a mysterious red, wooden door. Hesitant at first to explore this other world that feels as substantial as reality, she nonetheless finds herself drawn to the door upon witnessing a masked stranger with unconventional tendencies entering it alone.

Desperate to rectify her lonesome situation during her time awake, she endeavors to handle the weighty demands of her job and distant father. But when she meets Bonnie, an outgoing girl who reminds her of the best friend who left, Drew begins to wonder about the possibilities of second chances.

Still, the memory of her absent friend continues to haunt her, even in her sleep. As she works to unravel their mysteries, the effects of her dreams on her daily life become ever more apparent―for, as it seems, more than one hidden truth remains to be uncovered.

Once Drew has opened the door, things might not return to the way they used to be…

An emotional and fantastical exploration of mental health and healing, this beautifully written magical realism novel combines the cozy and heartfelt elements so beloved by readers of Lonely Castle in the Mirror and When the Coffee Gets Cold.

Chick Lit Book Cafe Review:

Filled with beautiful imagery and writing, Behind the Red Wooden Door by Sofia Ulrikson is a treat for all readers of mystery, magical realism and romance.

Drew’s feeling alone after leaving a close friend of hers and traveling somewhere new.  While the scenery around her is beautiful, she knows her friend’s presence is what would make it beautiful.  As Drew tries to adapt to her new surroundings, she begins to dream about a beautiful ermine door; what could it mean?  Working in a dead-end job at a grocery, Drew can’t stop thinking about the red-haired woman she saw and the feelings seeing her brings back up.  When she starts seeing Petra, her ex-girlfriend, in her dreams, she can no longer deny these dreams as mere coincidence. As painful as her dreams are, the need to be close to Petra again still guides her every action.  Until she meets Bonnie—an endearing woman who again reminds Drew what it feels like to have butterflies.  As Drew starts to open herself up to second chances, the impact of the ‘red door’ dreams begins to filter into her everyday life.  Will Drew be able to solve the mystery of what the red door means before it impacts her new potential relationship?  What happens if Drew actually opens the red door?

With an interesting and unique plot, Behind the Red Wooden Door by Sofia Ulrikson offers quite an experience for a variety of readers.  I loved the presence of so many strong women throughout this book as well as the magical realism of the red door and the dreams.  This story positioned mental health and healing with such care and tenderness.  I loved the metaphor of the red door as well as the mystery the door held.  Each dream created an ongoing suspense in the story that kept me guessing and provided tiny clues into who Drew’s friend was and what had happened between them.  My heart broke for the characters as they each tried to find happiness and to understand why events had played out the way they did.  Sometimes in life we don’t get that opportunity to understand when someone breaks our heart; I loved the way Petra kept appearing to Drew so she could get some answers.  With beautiful writing and undeniable talent, Sofia Ulrikson writes a story that shines a mirror into readers’ hearts and souls.  She has an ability to capture emotions and relationships in a way many other authors cannot.

Filled with love, belonging, and the quest for happiness, Behind the Red Wooden Door by Sofia Ulrikson is a delight for both young adult and adult readers.  Readers of romance, magical realism, mystery, women’s low fantasy fiction will love this story!  This is a touching, suspenseful and magical story.
