Review:

Murphy Drummer has a problem with luck. Wherever he goes he brings bad luck and disaster upon other people. As a young boy, Murphy is scorned and rejected by every school he tries to attend. A sympathetic teacher offers him the parting advice to “get a hobby,” and Murphy embraces the suggestion with all of childhood’s enthusiasm. He takes up a thousand hobbies and sets out to master them all. With nowhere he can go, Murphy remains at home with his loving grandfather and becomes a contented recluse. With the help of his grandfather’s friend, Murphy is homeschooled and continues upon his goal to master every conceivable hobby.

The story soon leaps to twenty-five years later, and we learn that Murphy has become a successful but anonymous writer of a popular syndicated column called “The Hobby Guy.” Murphy is now an expert at everything from needlepoint, macramé, and woodworking to speed-reading, juggling, and numerous musical instruments. We see he has also used his many skills to turn his home and yard into his own magical wonderland. The adult Murphy is naive in the ways of the world, but he is also smart and has a quirky, philosophical mind and outlook on life. But his grandfather has passed away, and now Murphy is forced to leave the safety of his home and take a daring trek out into the world.

After some unavoidable and hysterical misfortunes, Murphy meets the hopeful and confident Joy Daley—an optimist who tends to have nothing but good luck. Joy, a struggling writer for a small weekly paper, witnesses Murphy pull off one marvelous feat after another and becomes intrigued by the mysterious stranger. She thinks she finally has the story of her life. Joy seeks to interview Murphy for her column, but Murphy is reluctant. He doesn’t want her to become another victim of his mischievous jinx. The two are thrown together by a series of fateful and hilarious circumstances, whereupon love becomes as mystifying to Murphy as his crazy luck.

Murphy’s Luck by Benjamin Laskin is a unique and quirky story that leaves the reader feeling warm-hearted and good inside. It is filled with twists and turns, some mystery, and it has a storyline that is unlike anything I have ever read. It is fresh and laugh-out-loud funny. I loved it, couldn’t put it down, and I devoured it late into the night. There is a lot of wisdom packed within the magical message of this story. It is smart, deep, and light-hearted all at the same time.

With a lot of comical coincidences that kept me laughing, and Laskin’s play on words that are simply delightful, I was fully impressed by his writing style and understanding of life and the peculiarities that people possess.

The endearing characters are well developed with a good amount of depth to them. They become real to the reader as they interact with Murphy. Everyone who meets Murphy Drummer seems to discover new purposes for their lives in amazing ways. Murphy is hilarious, and his many antics mimic real life.
